Window Styles

  • Double Hung Windows

    double hung window

Top and bottom sash slide up and down within the window frame. With most current window models, the sash not only vertically, but tilt in for cleaning. Some newer designs have sashes that swing in for weightless hands-free cleaning. Double-hung windows have timeless traditional appeal. Whether your style is classic or contemporary, double-hung windows are a beautiful choice for any home. Plus, their two sliding sash provide very efficient ventilation. Simply raise the lower sash to allow in a cool breeze. Lower the upper sash to pull hot air from the ceiling outside. If you would like to do this, it is important to have full, not half screens.

  • Single-Hung Window

    single hung window

Single-hung windows offer the same timeless style as double-hung windows but only the bottom sash is movable. So you lose the advantage of upper ventilation at the top of a room.

  • Sliding Windows

    sliding window

Sliding windows move from side to side, allowing for easy operation. They are an ideal choice for difficult to reach areas. They come in a two sash version with a single operable panel or where both operate for ventilation. They also come in a three panel version, where the two end panels, which each generally account for 25% of the width, open for ventilation. They typically come with a removable sash that can be lifted out for cleaning. However with insulated glass these sashes can be heavy and difficult to handle. There are newer designs in the market that have a center pivoted sash, which rotate for cleaning, so the outside can be cleaned from the inside.

  • Bay and Bow Windows

    bay & bow window

Bay and bow windows are more than just windows. They're combinations of windows, generally double hungs, casements, and fixed windows, that reach out into the world. Even with limited wall space, a bay or bow window allows you to have more windows to capture the view and enjoy the scenery. They offer dramatic architectural impact to a home's exterior while significantly opening the space in the room where they are located.

  • Casement Window

    casement window

Casement windows are models of contemporary style and convenience. They feature one hinged sashes that swing out. Casement windows are generally open and shut with the turn of one crank handle at the sill. Models that don't use a crank are commonly referred to as push-out casements. A French casement features two push-out sashes that are hinged on opposite sides of the same frame.

  • Picture or Fixed Window

    picture window

A picture window is a very large window, usually located in a part of the house with a really nice view. The objective of a picture window is to frame the beautiful scene outside, whether it's a city skyline or a well-tended rose garden, as if it were a picture. Picture windows are therefore typically a single oversized pane. They are also usually longer horizontally, so as to provide a more panoramic dimension and outlook. They can be used by themselves, in a variety of applications or with other products, providing endless possibilities.

  • Curved Window

    curved window

Curved windows can add visually pleasing elegant style to a home. They are generally used above one or more windows joined together, or above an entry door for dramatic effect. Curved windows gently draw attention to themselves without overpowering the design as a whole.

  • Hopper Window

    hopper window

Hopper windows basically look the same as an awning window, except they are hinged at the bottom and open in at the top. The window screen attaches on the outside.

  • Awning Window

    awning window

Awning windows are hinged at the top and open out like an awning. At home with both traditional and contemporary designs, they're often placed above or below other windows-and over doors-for extra ventilation and light.

  • Special Custom Shaped Windows

    custom window

Windows can be made in a variety of special shapes to add design interest and extra light into a room. Generally these windows are fixed, but in some cases they can be made operable.

  • Angled Window

    angled window

Angled windows provide a strong focal point for your interior and exterior design. Whether your style is classic or contemporary, trendy or traditional - angled windows will be a unique addition to the look of your home.

Consider Energy Efficient Options

window contractors in Greater Pittsburgh

Upgrading your windows will improve your home's efficiency and comfort.

While the material of the window frame makes a difference, the energy efficiency of your replacement windows is mostly determined by the glass that is used.

Low-emissive, or Low-E window glass is manufactured with an invisible metal or metallic oxide coating to create a surface that reflects heat, while allowing light to pass through. Low-E windows are proven to increase energy efficiency, decrease fading of fabrics, and increase the overall comfort in your home.

Argon filled glass is another option. Argon is a non-toxic, odorless gas that is used in glass windows to prevent condensation and frost from forming on the window and provide improved soundproofing. Argon gas is filled between the panes of glass in a sealed unit to increase energy efficiency.

All ENERGY STAR windows feature a label with energy performance ratings from the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC). The label tells homeowners and contractors about how much heat and light travels through the windows through the U-value, solar heat gain coefficient, and visible transmittance of the windows.
