1-877-SWING CLEAN info@energyswingwindows.com Window Smarts 7.  Is all work to be performed and all product details in writing and signed by all parties? You’ve finally made the decision to do that major home improvement project you’ve been thinking about for years. You’ve interviewed a number of contractors and now you’re ready to place your confidence in, and your business with, the contractor you feel offers the greatest value for the work you’re planning. Here are a few general tips on how to handle the contract details--know what you are signing. The Written Contract No matter how well you know the person you’ll be working with, you need more than a handshake or a price on the back of a business card to protect yourself. Additionally, most of us have very little, if any, experience with home improvement products or installation methods. If you want the end results to match your dreams, it’s critical to make sure that all of the things that were agreed upon are documented in black and white. What are the five primary components in such a contract? 1.  Obviously, a description of the work to be done and details about the exact products to be used is critical; the more detailed the      specification, the better. 2.  Next is the time span when the work will be performed. 3.  Another thing that is critical for your protection is written verification of insurance coverage, including liability and workman’s compen-      sation insurance for every person who will be on your property. 4.  Warranty responsibilities should also be clarified. 5.  Finally, deposits and payment terms need to be clearly spelled out. All parties involved need to sign this contract for everyone’s protection. Quality Control In addition to protecting yourself with the signed contract, it is also helpful to get some insight into how the contractor assures the quality of his products and workmanship. Ask the contractor to explain his quality control inspection process. How does he ensure that all of his pro- ducts are free of defects prior to installing them? How does he track his customers and their specific projects should a need for service arise in the future? Having a good system in place for quality control and customer tracking is important for your satisfaction in the long run.
