8. How can I tell if a subcontractor is installing my replacement windows?
Just ask. But, be sure to get in writing what you are told. Many companies say one thing and do another. Make sure this is clarified in
writing to your satisfaction. Any reputable company will be more than glad to do this. If a subcontractor is used, be sure that you have
his state license or registration number, plus all of the required liability and Workman’s Compensation insurance policies.
Subcontractor window installers often work for many companies at the same time. Window companies pick and choose when to use
these subs and often negotiate labor pricing based on the time of the year. Additionally, subcontractor window installers are generally
jacks-of-all-trades. One day they may be an installer for windows, while another day they may be installing the plumbing in a new
bathroom.
Subcontractor window installers generally do not have a loyalty to any one company, nor are they certified. So what does this all mean?
Basically, you as a homeowner can spend hours, days, or weeks researching for the best possible window on the market. But, if the
project is placed in the wrong hands, it can turn into an installation disaster. There’s a famous saying in the industry that states, “you can
find a million-dollar window, but if it’s not installed properly, you’re worse off then when you started.”
