INSTALLATION OF WINDOWS

12. What is door and window cladding or capping?
Window cladding or capping refers to the application of one material, generally color-coordinated aluminum, over any exposed materials,
typically wood that surrounds the exterior of the newly installed window. The purpose of capping is two-fold. First, it provides a weather-
proof layer to control the infiltration of air and water. Properly done, it provides a waterproof condition that protects the original materials by
safely redirecting water or wind in order to control run-off and prevent infiltration into the window structure.
The second purpose of cladding is to provide an aesthetically pleasing framework to the new window. Cladding is custom-made on site to
assure a perfect fit and pleasing appearance. In some areas where the materials surrounding the window are wide, the installer should
provide multiple bends to minimize the appearance of wide flat areas around the window.
Proper capping can make or break the appearance and performance of a new window. However, it is one critical area of the installation
that is not understood until it is already done and too late to discuss alternatives. Cutting corners on cladding can save a poor installer a
lot of time; some even go so far as to eliminate capping by providing extra wide beads of caulking.
