11. Will I lose some sill width with replacement windows?
Probably. The primary reason for this is because most existing windows, especially those with single pane glass, are very narrow. They
were kept thin to reduce material costs. Modern replacement windows are made thicker to accommodate superior insulated glass and
high-performing weather stripping systems.
While a good installer will try to save as much sill area as possible, there is a limit to what can be done. Remember, to perform properly,
the new window has to be securely attached to the structural framework of the existing opening. Projecting the frame of the new window
out too far past the exterior wall surface can also create problems if the unit is not flashed or capped correctly. One way around this is to
build a structural wood box inside the current opening. The negative aspect to this approach is that it will reduce the size and the visible
glass of the new window.
