Tempered glass is a type of safety glass. While it is typically stronger than other types of glass to prevent shattering, it crumbles into tiny
pieces when broken, preventing injury. This is particularly helpful during hurricanes or tornadoes, when large shards of sharp glass could
cause serious injury or death.
Tempered glass is produced by heating it up to a high temperature and then rapidly cooling it within a small window of turnaround time.
This process makes the glass stronger and creates a certain amount of surface tension that keeps the glass from shattering into large
pieces when broken.
All sliding glass doors, storm doors, and most entry doors are required by law to use tempered glass, or some other type of safety glass.
Windows adjacent to walkways, or with sills close to the floor, also must be made of tempered or safety glass. While tempered glass is
safer than other mainstream products, it is certainly not bullet or shatter-proof and should not be installed as such.
