A storm door is not an insulated door. Providing insulation is the job of your prime entry door. If you have a good entry door, the primary function of the storm door is security and ventilation during warmer times of the year. During the winter, a storm door is basically at the same temperature as the outside air. Consequently, when you open your main door, the humidity in the warm interior air will start to condense on the surface of the storm door frame and glass. If it is cold enough, the condensation will turn to frost or ice almost immediately. This is the same thing that happens when you take something cold out of your freezer; condensation will start to form on it immediately. Unless your storm door is too tightly sealed, this condensation or ice will generally dissipate over time once the main door is closed. To create an escape route for the moisture, you may raise the storm door expander slightly or leave the storm door window open. Another reason for condensation could be because you have a poorly sealed entry door that is allowing the humid air from the house to leak out into the space between the doors, where it can condense on the cold storm door. Sometimes it is a good idea to ventilate the space between the two doors by lifting up on the bottom expander to allow the humid air to escape to the outside. You can also look at minimizing the air leakage through the prime door by replacing its weather-stripping or by installing a new door.
