From an energy savings perspective, storm doors are not really necessary if you have a well-insulated prime entry door. However, even if
you have a good performing entry door, you may still want to have a storm door for a little additional security or ventilation during certain
times of the year.
One thing you need to be aware of if you are considering installing a storm door, especially one with full view glass, is heat build-up. If you
have a dark colored entry door that receives direct sunlight during the day and you cover it with a storm door, it can act as a solar collector,
increasing the temperature of the space between the storm door and the entry door.
While this condition is worse in the summer, heat build-up also can be a problem in the winter. With certain door companies, putting a
storm door over a dark colored entry door that faces the sun may void the warranty. Ventilating the space by raising the storm door
expander slightly or leaving the storm door window open will help, but it may not eliminate the problem. The best solution is not to use a
storm door.
