In many cases, the answer is yes. Many older styles of windows were essentially pieces of glass with a small amount of framing around
them. This is especially true with old aluminum and steel windows. This is just one reason why those types of windows did not perform
over time. Newer windows have frame and sash members that are wider and thicker, which makes for a stronger overall window. This
trade-off results in a slight loss of visible glass area, but a window with better overall performance and longevity. This is more noticeable in
smaller windows where the frame consumes a larger portion of the overall size.
Many windows, especially old wood styles, are installed inside the existing window frame opening after the sashes are removed. Putting a
new generation window with a wider frame will cause the glass area to be slightly reduced. You will be able to maintain the visible glass
area by completely removing the old window, frame and all. However, the extra labor and material required to do this properly, could more
than double the cost of the project, while affecting the interior and exterior appearance of the window opening.
