REPLACEMENT WINDOWS
The Learning Center
Many high-quality windows are engineered to make cleaning easier. For example, most double hung windows tilt in for cleaning. There are
also technologically advanced double hung windows that swing in (like opening a book) for hands-free, weightless cleaning. With single
hung windows, the top sash is fixed and only the bottom sash may operate for cleaning.
Most sliding windows have sliding panels that are removable for cleaning. Unfortunately, because of the insulating glass and heavier frame
members, they may be too cumbersome for most homeowners to handle. A few manufacturers offer sliding panels that swing in from the
corner of the panel. However, depending upon their construction, some of these windows may have poorer air-infiltration and structural
performance. There are a few products on the market where the panels incorporate a special weather-stripping system that allow the
panels to be center-pivoted so that they can be rotated to clean the outside of the window from the interior of your home.
Depending upon the type and location of the operating hardware, new casement styles may be easier to clean than older casement
windows because the vent opens wide enough to access the exterior side of the window. However, you can’t really see the surface you are
cleaning.
