WINDOW MAINTENANCE
The Learning Center
New wood windows will probably require some maintenance over their lifetime. For the least maintenance, select windows with aluminum
or vinyl cladding on the exterior. Since aluminum cladding is painted, a large array of standard and customized colors are available.
However, you need to be sure that the integrity of the cladding is maintained over time. If the seal breaks down, water can get trapped
behind the cladding and cause the wood to deteriorate.
Most wood replacement windows use frames made of western pine. This wood has excellent performance properties for windows and is
reasonably priced. However, you need to be sure that they stay properly sealed. If not properly sealed, wood is a porous material that will
absorb moisture, causing it to swell and rot.
