GLOSSARY OF WINDOW TERMS The Learning Center Seat Board: A flat board cut to fit the contour of a bow or bay window and installed between the sills and the flat wall surface, providing a seat or shelf space. Shading Coefficient (SC) A measure of the ability of a window or skylight to transmit solar heat, relative to that ability for 1/8-inch clear, double-strength single glass. This measurement is being phased out in favor of solar heat gain coefficient, and is approximately equal to the SHGC multiplied by 1.15. Shims A thin, waterproof piece of material used between the window/door unit and the rough opening to support the unit, center it within the rough opening, and adjust it to a plumb, level and square position. If tapered shims are used, they must be used in pairs with the tapers opposing each other to avoid tilting the unit or twisting the jambs. Side Lights Tall, narrow, fixed or operating sashes on either or both sides of a door to light an entryway or vestibule. Seat Board - Single Pane Glazing Sill Horizontal member that forms the bottom of a window frame. Sill Course (Soldier Course) The row of brick, cement blocks or stones laid across the bottom of a masonry opening which lay under the outside edge of the window sill. Simulated Divided Light A method of constructing windows in which muntins are affixed to the inside and outside of a panel of insulating glass to simulate the look of true divided light. Single Pane Glazing This option means there is only one pane of glass in the window. This is the way all windows used to be made. Single pane windows are the least expensive but they do not provide as much insulation against cold and heat, so they can result in higher heating and cooling bills. < previous main menu       next >
