GLOSSARY OF WINDOW TERMS The Learning Center Passive Solar Heat Gain Solar heat that passes through a material and is captured naturally, not by mechanical means. Picture Frame Casing The use of casing on all four sides of the interior of a window, replacing the stool and apron at the sill. Also known as full-bound casing. Picture Window Sometimes called fixed-pane windows, picture windows are constructed of single panes of glass which do not move. Usually decorative, but offer no ventilation. Pitch The pitch of a roof is the degree of the inclination upward from horizontal or flat. It may be expressed in degrees or as the ratio of the number of inches it rises in each 12 inches of horizontal span: 4/12 means the roof rises four inches in every foot of horizontal span. Radiation The transfer of heat in the form of electromagnetic waves from one surface to another. Passive Solar Heat Gain - Rough Opening Rafter Members of a roof that support the roof load and run from the ridge to the eaves (overhang). Replacement Windows  This is a catch all phrase for a product that is designed to be used when old windows are removed from a building or house, and a new window unit is installed. Roll Form Aluminum There are two types of aluminum used in window manufacturing; roll formed and extruded. Roll form tends to be thinner in nature and is finished prior to the bending process in manufacturing. Extruded tends to have thicker walls and is substantially stronger Structural Rails The horizontal members of a window sash or door panel.
