ICE DAMS
GUTTERS
Energy Swing now offers gutters Pittsburgh
homeowners need! A good gutter system is
vital to a house because it directs the flow of
water so your home doesn't get flooded. A
professionally installed gutter system also
prevents additional types of water damage
and mud spots on your siding, among other
things. Energy Swing will install only
premium Alcoa gutters Pittsburgh residents
can rely upon to prevent serious water
damage.
Alcoa’s Free-Floating Gutter System: The
Best Defense You Can Have Against Ice
Dams
Alcoa’s gutter and rain removal system as
installed by Energy Swing Windows delivers
lasting performance and beauty with the strongest product for every installation. Gutter and downspouts are
available in a spectrum of colors. Every gutter is made of a heavy-duty .032” thick high strength aluminum
alloy. Alcoa’s rain carrying system comes with a Lifetime Limited Warranty from a company with years of
experience in quality building products.
Alcoa’s unique, patented free-floating apron and hanger system allows the gutter to expand and contract
with temperature changes—without causing the hangers to work loose as do spike hangers commonly used
with “seamless” gutter. Alcoa’s Back to Front Hanging System design is the key to the longest-lasting and
strongest gutter system you can buy. An Alcoa gutter system is
designed to support at least 50 pounds per lineal foot, way more
than the most severe ice dam can throw at it. It’s the strongest
system you can choose for your home. It is also more resistant to
damage from ladders than lightweight “Seamless” gutters made
from thinner, lower strength aluminum alloys.
The front lip of Alcoa gutters is lower than the back, allowing water
to drain over if the downspout is clogged. On other systems,
backed-up water can seep into the house, causing serious damage
to soffit and fascia.
Alcoa’s Gutter Also Have a Tough Finish Both Inside & Out
Lifetime performance means a lifetime of beauty, too. Alcoa gutters
and downspouts receive Alcoa’s exclusive tough Alumalure 2000
finish, applied in two separate coating operations and baked on to outlast by years and years the soft one-
coat, polyester finishes used on seamless gutter.
Alcoa’s interior gutter surfaces are treated with a special,
corrosion-resistant coating, then clear-coated, to withstand a
lifetime of bad weather, including acid rain and other
atmospheric pollutants.
And our Alumalure 2000 finish comes in a variety of designer-
selected colors to complement your home and to match available
Alcoa aluminum soffit and trim products.
Why is Alcoa’s Free Floating Gutter System a Better
Investment than “Seamless” Gutters?
First of all, so-called “seamless” gutter isn’t seamless at all. It’s
formed on site, to size, from a continuous roll of aluminum—but
everywhere it turns a corner, there are seams. Seamless gutter
offers a modest initial cost. But the first time you have to replace
it, seamless becomes a lot more expensive than Alcoa’s lifetime
Traditional Select system. And the truth is, seamless needs to be
replaced every few years. Here’s why.
Seamless gutter is attached in one of two ways. One is with a bracket that hooks in the front of the gutter
and is attached to the fascia board by means of spikes driven through the back side of the gutter, which in
essence, nails it in place. The second method involves the use of spikes driven through the front nose of the
gutter, through ferrules (tubes) inside the gutter and through the back of the gutter into the fascia of the
house. In a few years, with either system these fixed in place spikes work loose as the gutter expands and
contracts due to temperature changes. The gutter then begins to sag under the weight of rain, ice and
snow. This causes some significant problems.
*
First, as the spikes through the gutter work back and forth, the holes they make in the fascia
become enlarged, allowing backed-up water or snow-melt to seep into the eaves, eventually
causing structural damage to the house. With the spike and ferrule system, the spikes work loose,
the heads begin to protrude from the gutter, which is unsightly and allows the gutter to pull away
from the fascia.
*
If the gutter backs up, water seeps into the house,
because the front lip of “seamless” gutter is level with
the back.
*
Eventually, over time, the combination of loosened
spikes and the weight of the water, ice and snow
causes the gutter to pull away from the fascia and
eventually fall off, often damaging the house and its
landscaping.
*
As a result, spiked in place gutter systems need to be
replaced every few years.
Alcoa’s BACK TO FRONT HANGING SYSTEM is designed to
overcome the problems of seamless gutter. It is designed so
well, it’s guaranteed to perform as long as you own your home.
*
Alcoa’s gutter system is hung, not nailed in place. The
back of the high strength gutter is continuously supported by an interlocking hook system that is
firmly attached to your roof trusses.
*
The front of the gutter is supported by specially designed high strength hangers which are also
firmly attached to you roof trusses.
*
The combination of this high strength hanging system
allow the gutter to slide back and forth as it expands and
contracts, eliminating stress on the fasteners. Alcoa’s
apron and hangers are engineered to support far more
weight than ordinary spiked-in-place systems, without
sagging.
*
As a result, an Alcoa gutter stays put and doesn’t cause
water to leak into your home.
An Alcoa gutter system is a one-time, lifetime investment that pays
off in savings, performance and beauty for as long as you own
your home.
Engineered to the Last Detail
Alcoa’s lifetime-product engineering applies to the smallest details
to assure a trouble free rain removal system.
Downspouts are available in two sizes to ensure proper flow. A 2” x 3” downspout will handle typical runoff
from roofs up to 600 square feet. A 3” x 4” downspout will carry the runoff from a 1,200 square foot roof.
Expansion Joints are engineered to provide for expansion and contraction in longer runs of gutter and hip-
roof installations—an advantage not available in continuous or “seamless” gutter.
Corner Caps provide an attractive, finished look for inside or outside miters compared to double joint box
corners.
End Caps and eave tubes are precision engineered for a more secure seal.
Clips and Anchors secure downspouts, while allowing the tubing to expand and contract freely. These
fasteners are uniquely designed for eye appeal, as opposed to the unsightly aluminum downspout straps
used with “seamless” gutter systems.
The difference between polyester-
finished “seamless” gutter material (top)
and Alcoa’s Alumalure 2000 (bottom)
after acidified salt-fog testing.
Alumalure 2000 stands up to the
elements.
Changing temperatures and the weight of
water, ice and snow cause “seamless”
gutter to work loose. Water can seep into
your house through enlarged spike holes.
Gutter eventually sags and falls off.
Alcoa gutters last a lifetime because our
free-floating hanger system allows gutter
to slide back and forth when it expands
and contracts. Lower front lip keeps any
backed-up water from seeping into fascia.
Alcoa Traditional Select gutter systems
are tough enough to last even in the most
severe northern climates. Our Back to
Frong Hanging System supports more
weight without pulling nails loose.
